Effects of Social Media on Students

21 Jan

Social media has become so famous among college students. It is an easy way to stay in touch with other people. Social networking sites such as Facebook has now in nearly every student’s life. However, it has also reported that some websites are disturbing students from their studies, which eventually is lowering students’ grades. This is why some colleges are trying to ban access to such websites such as Twitter, Facebook so that students will be able to concentrate on their studies.

Studies have shown that social media websites are playing an important role in people’s lives. Researchers have found that students spend more time on Facebook than reading books and writing assignments. This shows that students are more interested in socializing than studying, that could have negative effects on their grades.

Students who attend colleges that have blocked social media websites on campus, allow them to focus on their homework, writing assignments, creating notes and reading, so that they can seriously concentrate on their work assignment. This helps students to retain information and ensures that more writing work is being done on time. Instead of checking other people’s profiles, students are able to focus on writing their papers and completing their assignments.

Though social media websites allows students to stay connected with one another, however it is full of distraction. Sometimes, students skip classes because they are on Facebook, Twitter or similar websites. But these websites help students to coordinate their schedules, study groups and meetings.

Nowadays, the internet brings together in latest and meaningful ways. Social media websites allow students to stay connected, learn important social skills and stay on top of essay assignments and study groups. It is incredibly distracting, as students have a difficult time concentrating on their homework, attending classes and completing assignments on time.

Effective note taking skills

Note-taking is an important part of the overall learning process that students go through during their university/college life. It helps you in understanding, processing and retrieving the information you receive.

Effective note taking helps you avoid plagiarism, focus on important points identified by your tutor in your assignments, and helps you prepare for your exams. On the other hand, it also distracts you from listening and understanding the on-going lecture. You may end up spending more time reading and going your entire note to find the important points. Developing an effective note-taking practice will help you overcome these problems, enabling you to study in a hassle-free way.

  • It is best to undertake active note-taking rather than passive. Active note taking is done when you are collecting data for your assignment or conducting research. Writing notes in your own words allows you to take active notes effectively. This mode of note-taking helps you to remember things and make meaning from what you learn. Passive note-taking, on the other hand, involves highlighting important sentences, cutting articles from documents, journals and writing notes on almost everything you read as you are not sure on what is important, etc.
  • While making notes, always make sure that the language is easy-to-read and simple. Don’t get into unnecessary details and stick the basic points. Also ensure that you express thoughts and ideas in your own words and use Illustrations, figures and charts where necessary.
  • Make use of linear note taking. This involves writing notes with headings and subheadings.  You can also number your points for your ease or even try using spider diagrams. These diagrams link one point to another and form an effective mode to remember various points.
  • When taking note during lectures, make sure to listen to what your tutor says and then write down only the important points.
